Lights, camera, take action: National Epilepsy Awareness Month
November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month across the U.S. It's a month dedicated to helping educate others about seizures, their symptoms, and options for treatment of the fourth most common neurological condition in the U.S. Epilepsy affects 1 in 26 people during their lifetime and 3.4 million people are currently living with active epilepsy. That's why each year, the Jane and John Justin Institute for Mind Health at Cook Children's continues the tradition of making this month a priority to raise awareness for this common, yet rarely discussed condition.
This year's theme serves as a public awareness campaign to reduce epilepsy-associated stigma. The campaign, Lights, camera, take action!, aims to bring awareness to the condition and the people fighting epilepsy each day. This year's campaign T-shirt recognizes Megan, a friend and supporter of Cook Children's who passed away earlier this year from complications of her epilepsy. Learn more about Megan and her family's connection to Cook Children's and epilepsy awareness here.
Cook Children's, in partnership with community government and businesses, will once again light various buildings purple during November - Epilepsy Awareness Month. In addition, Cook Children's will hold our annual Epilepsy Awareness Month Grand Rounds highlighting the work of the Neurosciences Research Center at Cook Children's and give out our Epilepsy Hero Awards to members of the staff that have shown exceptional dedication to the diagnosis, treatment and awareness of epilepsy.
